Interstate 40 Meets Carolina Circle Mall

This is rather pointless, but I thought I'd share this.

With some phopshopping, I was able to modify Carolina Circle Mall's emblem and make it look like Interstate 40 with the same Interstate shield colors.

Ring Road

Ring Road is one of my favorite un-numbered roads. Why? If you don't, you havent' visited this blog enough.

Anyway, Ring Road was a circular loop around Carolina Circle Mall. It was one of the first roads to make a complete circle around a mall. Hence the name, "Carolina Circle Mall".

Currently, Ring Road has been pretty much destroyed with the mall. Only one section of it remains running from the Cone Blvd access route to the Wal-Mart construction entrance as seen in the map. Once the Wal-Mart opens, the remaining Ring Road will be renamed "New Ring Road". Bet it took them years and years to think of that name.

Roadgeeking at Carolina Circle Part 1

In my continuing saga to prove that Carolina Circle Mall was a roadgeek, I've created these two freeway signs to prove my theory. The first floor corridor is known as CC-23 (North/South) and the second floor corridor is known as CC-67 (North/South). The appendix corridor (Theater/Piccadilly) is known as "Theatre Boulevard" however is unsigned. The food court/carousel area is known as CC-223 (North/South). The second floor loop above the food court is known as CC-467 (North/South).

"Exit 4" is the actual escalator to the second floor. The sign giving direction to Dillard's first floor is an opening near the fountain.

Located at the first food court access section going toward Belk. CC-123 is known as a half-beltway.

I'll be adding more signs during the next few days so stay tuned for more Roadgeeking at Carolina Circle.

Carolina Circle Mall's Road System

I've always considered Carolina Circle Mall a roadgeek mall. I'm going to explain about the roads near the mall and the roads that will come in the future.

Ring Road: This road circled around the mall. Maybe the reason the road circle around the mall was because the mall was called Carolina "Circle" Mall. Anyway, the signposts seemed to be make out of wood. If I can, I'll get a picture of one of those. Ring Road was the main access to the mall. You pretty much had to get on it to go to the mall. You accessed Ring Road via these little access roads. I think there were three. One from Cone Blvd and two from 16th Street. Currently the only section of Ring Road that is open to traffic is from Cone Blvd to a little bit pass the old Craftsmen's Studio.

The Wal-Mart shopping center will bring new roads to the mall area.

Spline Road: Spline Road will start from the old Ring Road/Cone Blvd access road to the old Ring Road/Cone Blvd access road. This road will actually cut through the former mall. It will run through near Dillard's and the ice rink/carousel.

New Ring Road: Basically, it will carry on the allignment of the first Ring Road except it will begin at Wal-Mart and end at the supposed home improvement store in the northeastern quadrant. It will intersect with Spline Road.

I can tell you one thing. Carolina Circle Mall was a roadgeek and will always be a roadgeek.

See It in Person

If anyone wants to go and see Carolina Circle Mall in person, here are some directions to the late mall.

From Winston-Salem: Take Interstate 40 West to Exit 39 (US-29 North). Then, take the 16th Street Exit and turn right. The mall will be on your left.

From Charlotte or High Point: Take Interstate 85 North to Exit 120 (Business 85 North). Then, take Exit 39 (US-29 North). Finally, take the 16th Street Exit and turn right. The mall will be on your left.

From Danville or Reidsville: Take US-29 South, take the Cone Blvd. Exit, and turn left. Turn right onto Sands Ride.

From Asheboro: Take US-220 North to Exit 81. On the flyover ramp, turn right and hit Interstate 40 East. Then, take Exit 39 (US-29 North). Finally, take the 16th Street Exit and turn right. The mall will be on your left.

From Raleigh, Durham, or Burlington: Take Interstate 40/85 West to Exit 131 (Painter Blvd.). Take Exit 19 (US-70) and turn right onto US-70 West. Take the US-29 North Exit to 16th Street. Finally, take the 16th Street Exit and turn right. The mall will be on your left.

Well that's how you get to Carolina Circle Mall. With these directions, you can take a look at the destruction of the mall or you can use these later as directions to Wal-Mart.
