There' hasn’t been any posts made here in over a year and a half! That is simply due to the fact that there really hasn’t been much to report in the world of Carolina Circle Mall, unfortunately. I am still very much alive and still as obsessed with this long-gone mall just as I ever was! In fact, I did find a few artifacts from the 1980s that I will be sharing with you guys, so stay tuned!
Billyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04833357672653250112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16332240.post-69387721283654948852016-10-03T23:46:00.000-04:002016-10-03T23:48:11.539-04:001996 Antique Car Show Video

Now here’s something I’ve been after for many many years. This is actual video footage inside Carolina Circle Mall. This was recorded on Sunday, May 5th, 1996. Hopefully we can find more footage from the mall like this someday.

Also, here’s the newspaper ad that advertised this very same show!
Billyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04833357672653250112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16332240.post-80158510515913812062016-10-03T23:35:00.000-04:002016-10-03T23:36:27.599-04:00Welcome Back!

Been awhile, huh? Well, the reason behind the lack of updates here at the Carolina Circle City blog is simple. Microsoft stinks. For the last several years, I have made all of my posts using “Microsoft Live Writer”, which worked brilliantly for many years…until it decided to no longer play nicely with Google accounts.

Thankfully, I have found another program that’s based off Live Writer, except the darn thing actually works! This program is called “Open Live Writer” and discovering it has really saved me, meaning posting will resume.

Anyway, what’s new in the world of Carolina Circle Mall? Well, the big thing to talk about is the 40th anniversary party that was held at Monk’s Cheesesteaks on August 6th this year. It was a small turnout but it was such a blessing to meet all of you folks who went to the mall and even worked at the mall when it was still around. I had a lot of fun there and I hope you did. I know my aunt really had fun there, reminiscing on old times. The photo on the left is of the display I had setup at the party. Again, to those who came and to those who supported it, thank you very much! I really mean it.

Also, I am currently in the planning stages of writing a book about Carolina Circle Mall to potentially have published. It's not going to be a boring history book about the mall but instead, a book detailing memories and experiences people had at the mall. Because of this, I am looking to sit down and interview people who worked at the mall and/or visited the mall very regularly when it was opened. If you are interested, please let me know. Your input will be GREATLY appreciated. This is something I've been wanting to do for years and I'm now determined to make it a reality. If you’re interested in helping, email me at carolinacircle89@gmail.com.
Billyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04833357672653250112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16332240.post-19926562131190743612015-11-15T22:05:00.001-05:002015-11-15T22:05:38.361-05:00Picture of the Day: 11/15/2015

Here are some people standing on the Ice Chalet sometime in the 1980s.
Billyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04833357672653250112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16332240.post-74897741103665582822015-11-14T22:42:00.001-05:002015-11-14T22:42:43.403-05:00Picture of the Day: 11/14/2015

Here’s an interesting picture of a tree with the Carousel standing behind it sometime in the early ‘90s. Because of this, I have decided to bring back the Picture of the Day. Plus, I really need to bring action back to this blog.

This particular picture was taken sometime in the 1980s. This was the back entrance to the mall where Piccadilly Cafeteria and the Circle Six Theatres were. I remember entering the mall quite a bit through here.
Billyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04833357672653250112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16332240.post-64682615255795247242015-06-30T14:28:00.001-04:002015-06-30T14:28:55.641-04:00Demolition 10 Years Later

Today, June 30, 2015 marks 10 years since demolition began on Carolina Circle Mall. The demolition lasted from June 30-September, 30, 2005.

I still can’t believe that an entire decade has past since the demolition began. I remember riding down US-29 and noticing crews picking away at the mall on June 30, 2005. I had known for several months, since I began my interest in the mall itself that past February, that it was only a matter of time before the mall would be torn down.

So for the next three months, I visited the mall as it was being demolished. I even went as far as making two videos of the demolition on July 1st and August 1st. Both of these videos are on my YouTube channel now and if you’d like to see the photos I took on those two days, I have them all posted at the Carolina Circle Mall Fan Club on Facebook.

I know I’m repeating myself, but I still can’t believe that Carolina Circle Mall has physically been gone for 10 years now. The entire area that the mall was once at is completely different now. 10 years doesn’t seem that long but at the same time, a lot has changed.
Billyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04833357672653250112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16332240.post-55353532734754343772015-03-03T22:46:00.000-05:002015-03-03T22:47:51.994-05:00Video of Mall April 19, 2005

I was going through some of the YouTube videos I’ve uploaded over the years and I came across this camera video of Carolina Circle Mall I made back in April 2005. I redubbed the audio in 2010 because the audio on the original tape had gone bad. But it’s very cool to see this old footage of the mall only two months before it began demolition.
Billyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04833357672653250112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16332240.post-12950332480121033112015-02-09T18:18:00.001-05:002015-02-09T18:18:33.248-05:00RIP Radio Shack
I’m sure most of you reading this right now already know this, but recently, Radio Shack filed for bankruptcy and is closing most of its stores. Some stores are going to be converted into Sprint/Radio Shack hybrid stores, but all of the Radio Shacks in the Greensboro, NC area are unfortunately closing for good.

I figured that this would be a fine time to look back at the Radio Shack that was formerly at Carolina Circle Mall. Radio Shack was one of the original 22 stores to open at the mall on August 4, 1976 and was located on the second level right by Belk. Radio Shack was very successful at Carolina Circle and was one of the mall’s main-stays for many years.

Radio Shack’s Carolina Circle Mall location closed in July 1996 and moved down the road to a new shopping center that was built on Cone Blvd. at Church St. that same year. Eventually, that Radio Shack also closed sometime in the early 2000s.

“Shalimar Photography”, a photography oriented store, opened in Radio Shack’s former spot at Carolina Circle Mall sometime in the late ‘90s and lasted a few years until the very early 2000s. The entrance to Shalimar Photography is in the photo to the left.

I vividly remember my dad always taking me to the Carolina Circle Mall Radio Shack to buy certain pieces of electronics and electronic components. The item I remember the most that he bought at that Radio Shack was a handheld CB radio that he kept in his 1986 Nissan Pickup truck in the early ‘90s. I think he actually still has that CB radio somewhere.

So I am sad to say goodbye to all of the Radio Shacks closing in 2015. As a vintage computer fan, I’ll always remember them for their Tandy line of computers, most notably the Tandy TRS-80 and the Tandy 1000. To close this, here is a picture of the inside of the Radio Shack at Carolina Circle Mall taken in 2003. You can still see the neon sign that said “The Technology Store” in the background.
Billyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04833357672653250112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16332240.post-40215471325001234062015-01-24T22:24:00.001-05:002015-01-24T22:24:49.168-05:00Updates for 2015
Seeing that it’s now January 2015 and it’s been several months since I’ve last updated this blog, I figure it’s time to finally get around to updating it.

As you can possibly tell, there hasn’t been much excitement in the world of Carolina Circle Mall lately. No new pictures, no new ads, or new anything really. However, through persistence, I’m confident we’ll find something interesting this coming year. I’m still seeking more photos of the mall’s Carousel and a TV ad for the mall, both of which are HIGHLY sought out by myself.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about this year is that there will be quite a few major anniversaries this year involving Carolina Circle Mall. The most notable anniversary will be June 30th which will mark 10 years since the mall began demolition! I cannot comprehend that it’s been almost 10 years since this happened. In fact, February 21st will be 10 years since my dad drove me down to the abandoned mall to take pictures, which ignited my interest in CCM. The picture on the left is one of the photos I took that day. And to top it all off, September will mark 10 years since this blog first went online! All of these things I find hard to believe happened 10 years ago. The year 2005 still seems so recent to me but yet, it was still an entire decade ago when all of this happened! Alright, enough rambling on about the passage of time.

Also, I have begun planning a “Carolina Circle Mall Reunion” to be held somewhere in Greensboro sometime in 2016, which will be the mall’s 40th anniversary. All members of the Carolina Circle Mall Fan Club on Facebook will be invited and this idea is already sparking interest. Obviously, this will take LOTS of planning and I’m not sure how it’ll be pulled off, but I’m confident that if I work with some friends of mine from the Facebook group, this just might happen.

Anyway, welcome to the year 2015 and I want to close by saying that this blog will not be going anywhere. Sure, my posts here aren’t as frequent as they used to be, but this blog still serves as the #1 resource for information and memories of the old Carolina Circle Mall and my nostalgia for the old mall will never die, meaning that this blog will not die either. I will now close with a cool in-store laserdisc that was played at Montgomery Ward in 1993, showing off some cool and retro looking electronics. Back then, I never would have thought that someday, you could use a tiny cellular phone as a camcorder.

Billyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04833357672653250112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16332240.post-83783673512459365942014-08-06T22:32:00.000-04:002014-08-06T22:33:25.080-04:00The Motion Simulator

A hot topic at the Carolina Circle Mall Fan Club on Facebook recently has been the motion simulator ride that would be placed in the mall on occasion.

Not much is known about this motion simulator except that it was used throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s and would be placed on the lower level near Montgomery Ward.

The simulator was not a permanent fixture at the mall, as mentioned before. It would be placed inside the mall every few months or so and would be used for about a week. It was also not known for being very reliable, which may have been one of the reasons it wasn’t used frequently.

The above picture was not taken at Carolina Circle Mall, however the motion simulator in the picture was the same one that was used at Carolina Circle.
Billyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04833357672653250112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16332240.post-17191814542915782592014-08-04T15:12:00.000-04:002014-08-04T15:13:07.547-04:00Happy 38th Birthday

Carolina Circle Mall officially opened this day in 1976. Over the past 9 years of having this blog, I’ve said so many things about the mall that it seems like there might not be anything else to say.

However, I got to thinking awhile ago about the memories I have of going to Carolina Circle Mall as a child and how much I enjoyed the overall atmosphere, not just the Carousel. Compared to the other malls in the area at that time, and even nowadays, there was something different about Carolina Circle, but what was it?

I think that unlike other malls that were built strictly for business and retail, Carolina Circle Mall was designed to be not only retail, but for entertainment. It was the only mall in the area with a movie theater attached to it and most notably, it was the only mall in the area to ever have an Ice Chalet or a Carousel (however Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem now has a small Carousel). Even though Carolina Circle Mall failed financially, I will always remember it for the special features it had that set it apart from other malls but most importantly, the memories the mall gave me.
Billyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04833357672653250112noreply@blogger.com0
