Mall Under Construction

Mall Under Construction

Courtesy of the “Remember Greensboro in the ‘60s & ‘70s” Facebook group, this is an aerial picture of Carolina Circle Mall under construction, circa 1975/1976.

As you can see, the signs for Montgomery Ward and Belk had not been put up yet and the entire parking lot had not been paved yet. Also, much of Ring Road was still in a grated state.

Aerial View 1971

David Denny emailed me this interesting picture this afternoon showing an aerial view of Carolina Circle Mall before it was Carolina Circle Mall in 1971. I believe the photo is looking southeast.

Interesting to see Cone Boulevard ending at US-29. Also interesting seeing a rural cattle farm instead of a mall or Wal-Mart.

Thank you David Denny for this interesting picture.

1965 Aerial Photo

This is an aerial photo of the mall area from the year 1965, 11 years before the mall opened.

The farm in the lower lefthand corner was a cattle farm owned by a dentist named Dr. T. Edgar Sikes. In 1973, Alpert Investment bought the farm from Dr. Sikes and thanks to that move, Carolina Circle Mall was built.

Also notice how Cone Boulevard actually ended at US-29 instead of dead ending a mile later like it does today.

The Very Early Years

Ever wondered what Carolina Circle Mall was like before it was built? I have the answer.

According to the book Dateline: Greensboro, a dentist named Doctor T. Edgar Sikes owned a cattle farm on the future site of Carolina Circle Mall.

I think in the early '70s, Edgar sold his farm to the Carolina Circle developers.

I have an aeral picture of his farm taken in 1965 in that book, but due to copyright, I'm unable to post it. That picture also shows Cone Boulevard ending at US-29 instead dead ending a mile east.
