December 4, 1977: The Day the Deer Shopped

From what I've heard from the Internet and people, apparently some deer have visited the mall before.

On Sunday, December 4, 1977, at 10:30 AM, three deer who were startled by cleaning equipment in the parking lot, paniced and broke through two plate glass windows. They then jump 18 feet to the first floor near the ice rink. Sadly, one doe broke its neck and died. The surviving two were captured and released.

Let's investigate this situation and see what caused it.

In 1977, Carolina Circle Mall was still on the outskirts of Greensboro. Of course, deer are more common outside of the city. Also, it's a well known fact that animals can easily be scared by the slightest sound. Just like me. :)

As seen in this picture, the main entrance windows are circled. Because the ice rink was right below this entrance, this is probably where the deer broke in.

The deer that was killed when it fell suffered from a broken neck. Of course, a broken neck can have the strength to kill.

My friend knows some people who were at the mall (I think ice skating) right after the deer incident. At least they weren't there during the deer incident.

I was working at the Ice Chalet at the time this happened. I came into work that Sunday and saw the broken glass and blood left behind. I worked at the Ice Chalet through high school. Met lots of people and had some great times with my co-workers. Anybody else out there work at the Ice Chalet from '77 to '80?
