Carolina Circle City isn't just about Carolina Circle Mall, it's also about the Carolina Circle Area. The mall was neighbored by stores like Toys R' Us, K-Mart, Craftsmen Studio, Color Tile, McDonald's, Taylor's Discount Tires, Bojangles, Shoney's, Wendy's, Golden Corral, etc. Most of those stores closed about the same time the mall closed, but a few have survived.
I went out to that area today and took some pictures for your viewing pleasure as well as the latest construction of the Wal-Mart.
The K-Mart was a big store that was given life by Carolina Circle Mall in 1976. Unfortunately, the Blue Light burned out in May of 2002. Because I have many memories of the K-Mart, I was excited to take some pictures of the interior. Don't worry, I didn't go inside. I just looked through the window.
The construction of the new Wal-Mart has been progressing well. I estimate the opening date will be sometime between Summer and Christmas of 2006. That would make it exactly 30 years after Carolina Circle Mall opened.
McDonald's is another goodie. I have many memories of that McDonald's as well like getting Halloween McDonaldland Figures in my Happy Meal around 1993. Sadly, it's under a major renovation and will soon look more 2000's than 90's.
I hope you enjoy these pictures of the sorrounding area.
