2002: The Year of Doom

Most stores in Greensboro's Carolina Circle Area have closed up. But the 3 of the most important places in this area closed in 2002. The * means that the building has been demolished.

Sunday, January 27, 2002*: The first place to close in 2002 was Carolina Circle Mall. At the time, the only store open was Montgomery Ward. Due to the nationwide closure of the entire Montgomery Ward chain, the Carolina Circle location closed. This closure obviously resulted in the closure of the entire Carolina Circle Mall.

May, 2002: The second place to close in 2002 was K-mart. That same year, the K-mart chain filed for bankruptcy protection which resulted in them closing their locations that were having slow business. The one near Carolina Circle was on the list. So in May of 2002, the blue light was turned off at the Carolina Circle area location.

August, 2002*: The last store that closed in 2002 was Toys R' Us. I don't really know the story about this one, but I do know they announced the closure in March or April that same year. However, I did get a pretty good price on a bike during their Going Out of Business Sale.

Toys R Us pretty much died for the same reason Kmart did. Slow sales.
