This is an aerial photo of the mall area from the year 1965, 11 years before the mall opened.
The farm in the lower lefthand corner was a cattle farm owned by a dentist named Dr. T. Edgar Sikes. In 1973, Alpert Investment bought the farm from Dr. Sikes and thanks to that move, Carolina Circle Mall was built.
Also notice how Cone Boulevard actually ended at US-29 instead of dead ending a mile later like it does today.
