A very good friend of mine found this on an old slide of his. This is the exterior of the mall, showing Ivey’s and Montgomery Ward. Not sure when this was taken. Looks like late ‘70s/early ‘80s.

The restaurant in the center is Gatto Pizza, where for some strange reason if their sign was never lit up, I’d go nuts as a kid. Cut off on the right of the picture is my all time favorite restaurant at the mall, Circle Café & Deli (became Subs & Spuds in 1995).

One of my all time favorite stores at Carolina Circle Mall; Camelot Music! I still have a truckload of audio cassettes I bought from that store (most of which I’ve put on CD). Next door on the right was another favorite store of mine at the mall, Everything’s a Dollar (we’ll take a look at it tomorrow).

Well, this is interesting. This is an ad found on the wall of the mall corridor for hairspray (not the musical). The ad has a copyright date of 1998 and features something you normally wouldn’t think you’d ever see at Carolina Circle Mall; an Internet address! The address was for the hairspray, not the mall.

Here is the former location of Service Merchandise in 2006, right across from the mall. Service Merchandise left the building in 1997 and moved across town to Bridford Parkway, finally closing nationwide in the early 2000s. This building is currently used as some type of office supply manufacturing company.

Ah yes, I had many a good time at the Carolina Circle Mall food court. Two classic restaurants can be seen in this picture. On the far right is Mr. Wok Chinese Restaurant (was Tater Patch until about 1994) and the famous Monk’s Cheesesteaks & Cheeseburgers.

This is a pretty low resolution picture, but from a January 2011 edition of the Greensboro News & Record comes this picture of the Carolina Circle Mall Ice Chalet in early 1988, during the mall’s renovation. Presumably, this was right before the Ice Chalet closed.

On the right side of the picture is the famous Ice Chalet “Overlook Window” at Annabelle’s.

Courtesy of the “Remember Greensboro in the ‘60s & ‘70s” Facebook group, this is an aerial picture of Carolina Circle Mall under construction, circa 1975/1976.

As you can see, the signs for Montgomery Ward and Belk had not been put up yet and the entire parking lot had not been paved yet. Also, much of Ring Road was still in a grated state.

I found this in a photo of what I believe is “Fluf N’ Stuf”. The picture was taken sometime in late 2004 during Carolina Circle Mall’s abandonment period.

I would like to know what this pink booklet was about. It is obviously related to Carolina Circle in someway, due to the Circle Crescent being clearly on the cover.

Why Home of Carolina Circle Mall.com is now a Medicine Website

I’ve been receiving a ton of emails and messages on Facebook regarding the current state of Home of Carolina Circle Mall.com.

Sometime last week, the domain registrar (the place that handles the web-address), goofed up beyond belief. The site now redirects to a website selling prescription drugs. I emailed Webs.com, the site that hosts Home of Carolina Circle Mall, and they said they had no idea what’s going on. So they’re absolutely no help at all.

I’m hoping that within the coming weeks, my good friend and contributor Jeremy will transfer the site to his server, getting rid of Webs.com and its bugs for good. But until then, sadly Home of Carolina Circle Mall will remain as it is. All further updates will occur here at Carolina Circle City. That is, until this whole mess is finally straightened out.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The New Look

Thanks to a new way to design templates with Blogger, I was able to finally redo the look and feel of Carolina Circle City. Please let me know what you think of it.

I am going to try and rework the logo so that it’s the horizontal version. Unfortunately, the software I use to create these logos with is being lent to a friend of mine, so until I get it back, this smaller version will have to do for now.

I am also disappointed that I can only use the background images supplied with Blogger and not any of my own images.

Comment Moderation Now Enforced

Due to unfortunate circumstances, I have now enabled comment moderation at Carolina Circle City.

For the entire 4 1/2 years of this blog’s existence, I have used word verification to prevent spam. It worked perfectly up until recently. It seems spambots have finally found a way around the word verification, resulting in spam in the comments. I’ve deleted about 5 spam comments the past few days.

Keep in mind that this is no body’s fault. It’s the fault of a machine. I don’t like the comment moderation either, but I have no other choice but to use it to prevent spam.

Comment moderation basically means that when you post a comment, it will not appear on the blog until I read it and approve it. I have it set to send me email notifications, so the time between the time you write the comment and the time I approve it shouldn't be too long. I've rarely had problems with human-created comments, but the spambots are just ridiculous.
